Thoughts of a First Timer at the Indiana District Convertion - 2002
On the weekend of August 16-18, 2002, I attended the 84th Annual Indiana District Convention held at the beautifully restored 100 year old French Lick Springs Resort Hotel along with around 650 Kiwanians and guests in attendance.
Becoming a member of Kokomo Golden K Kiwanis Club (after my GM retirement) has been a wonderful and rewarding time for me. The motto of the Indiana Kiwanis is "Serving the Children of the World". We are locally involved with Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis by raising money and volunteering in several ways, such as; collecting pop tabs, bake sales, dinners, raffles, recycling aluminum cans and Riley Penny Bucket collections.
At the French Lick convention, there were over forty workshops where we learned how to benefit our preparation of service to others. I could only schedule four of them, but I wished I could have had time for several other workshops.
A dinner and Casino Night started us off on Friday night. A silent auction was held which easily exceeded our goals for money raised for Riley Hospital. A day of workshops on Saturday , was followed by the Governor's Banquet on Saturday evening that was enjoyed by all, with a great band called "The New Odyssey" providing the entertainment.
On Sunday, we participated in elections of our District Leaders for the coming Kiwanis year, electing Jim Redslob as Governor and Steve Page as Governor-Elect for 2002-2003.
During the following brunch, there was an impressive candle-lit memorial service held in remembrance of our deceased members. This was followed by the installation of the newly elected Indiana District officers and Lt. Governors for their 2002-2003 terms of service.
In June 2003, the Kiwanis International Convention will be held in Indianapolis, which I am eagerly looking forward to attending. Incidently, at the present time, our host committees are searching for members who are fluent in any foreign language, to volunteer as interpreters during the convention.
